Michael Holberg

Many people spend their lives searching for the purpose they were put on this earth. I’m one of the lucky ones. I was put on this earth to create beautiful things.  Busy hands bring me peace. It is exciting to create works  that spark the imagination in me and others. For me creating art represents freedom, no rules or boundaries, just the flow of energy from somewhere in the universe into the mediums I work with.

I work in blown and sculpted glass. Shapeless and nearly invisible, glass is a very organic medium that is always slightly different each time you start a project. With my idea in mind as I start my work it is always interesting to see the work progress throughout the day. The organic shapes that I use, turn out best the less I touch them, so in order to achieve these shapes I often let the glass flow to where it wants to go giving a natural, un-forced feel to my work.

My newest series is called Costa Vetro. I find interesting driftwood walking the beaches on Puget Sound or along the lakes in the region. I then take the wood, scrape off any rotten materials clean it and may or may not sand the surface depending on the look I am hoping to achieve. In the studio, I then make glass components that match the “feel” of the wood to be used for the installation. When I am done composing the glass is permanently attached to the driftwood and the whole piece is then attached to a plinth ready to be displayed.
