COSTA VETRO

Mike Holberg's passion for glass started in 1995. That passion has enabled him to become a refined and disciplined artist dedicated to rich opulent colors and passionate sculptures of glass. Like many of the best glass artists in this country, Holberg is a product of Seattle. He grew up with the tidal rhythms of the waters of Puget Sound that washed the shores of Seattle. Costavetro (beach glass) evolved one lazy day at the shore. While walking on the sand he noticed how unusual and beautiful many of the driftwood pieces looked. Gnarly and worn bleached by the sun and salt water, the idea to match them up with glass was born.

Modern day glassblowing is an exciting rodeo between the artist (blowing, spinning, rolling, etc.) and gravity. Like the Italian glass artists, whose glass he so admires, Holberg has long embraced both aspects of the blowing process. He values organic asymmetry and spontaneity as well as the delicacy achieved with glass. With his new series titled Costavetro (beach glass) he is placing an emphasis on the organic form to capture the fleeting forms one might find at the beach, above or below the water line. The weathered sun bleached finish of the driftwood is in sharp contrast to the smooth sleekness of blown glass. The juxtaposition of driftwood and glass is absolutely stunning allowing the viewer to observe death and creation in one structure.
